Cutting the Strings

Social media has always been full of promise, but to me, it’s been the empty sort. Almost every social media expert out there says we need to be on these networks, making connections and interacting with our mysterious audience, even when we don’t yet have an audience. But where is the social part?

When I connect to others, I get spammed with automated messages and endless buy my stuff links. When I participate in groups or hashtags, people are rarely talking with each other but at. Communication is a two-way street. If we’re all yelling into a bullhorn, who’s left to listen?

I’m tired of being told I have to do something that I hate. It’s been said deleting your social media accounts is akin to digital suicide and may hurt you in the future. Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows for sure? For me, social media doesn’t bring my life joy, and that’s enough reason to cut the strings.
